Why is the country cooking of France so compelling? The answer lies in the terroir of its pays (regions), the fresh produce and specialty foods that are unique to each area and are then transformed into such traditional favourites as Soupeau Pistou and Choucroute Alsacienne.

Imagine awakening in a castle. You slip out of your poster bed, open french windows and step onto a stone balcony.
You take in the view of surrounding vineyards that slope down to a quaint tile-roofed village in the misty river valley below.
This isn’t a dream. You can actually spend the night in an authentic French château or manor house, one with all the personal care of a bed-and-breakfast.

One Response to “Gard (30)”

  1. The market at Vauvert is every Wednesday and every Saturday morning.
The Saturday market is the largest, although in high season both days are well visited by trader and producers. Vauvert is in the centre of the fruit and asparagus/vegetable production regions of the Gard, and prices are low.
The market generally consists of all the local products, plus some textile and bric-a-brac stalls. “Traiteurs” (ready cooked food) is also available, as are the Market halls with it’s cheese, vegetable, fruit and fish stalls. Opposite the main entrance to the halls is a “Chevaline” (horse) butcher, particularly noted for it’s production of the well know Camargue dish “La Gardienne” – a kind of meat stew made from Camargue Bulls meat and local olives – Price? Cheap, I paid 9eur,90cts for a pack with 1100grammes, and it’s FULL of meat…!
Many pictures of the Vauvert Market and Market Halls together with small videos can be seen on the link given.
